Post Processing Challenge February

The January winning image - (you can see the voting here)

The February challenge: This is a picture of an intersection located in downtown Somerset, KY.  This is looking down the alleyway from the judicial center.  I call this one "Bank Alley" since it contains three different banks.  Being that we both work in the banking services industry I thought the shot was perfect for us both to process.  Below is the unedited straight out of the camera shot:

The shot was made using a technique referred to as HDR.  I choose this technique since there were some deep shadows and some bright highlights.  HDR shots are comprised of three or more differently exposed shots and then digitally blended together.  I also used a technique called photo stacking to increase the sharpness of the shot.  Essentially I took three exposures while being focused on a near object and then I took and additional three exposures, but focused on a far way object.  This increases the items that are in focus throughout the entire shot.  To save space I've posted below the three different unedited exposures straight out of the camera shot:

Properly Exposed

Overexposed Exposed

Under Exposed

Post Processing Challenge

Welcome to the inaugural post processing challenge!

So what is the post processing challenge:  It a challenge between two Kentucky based photographers, where each month both photographers will process the same picture and then ask for the you to vote for the winner.  The picture each month will be taken by one of the photographers and both will process the same picture; putting their own unique spin on the picture.

The winner will be determined at the end of each month and the challenge will run for 12 months.  At the end of the 12 months we will reveal who the winning processor was each month.  That's right, the winning image will be announced at the end of each month, but the winning processor will not be announced until the end of the 12 months.

Time to meet the photographers:  As mentioned before the two photographers are based in Kentucky.  So lets meet the first photographer!

Mike Sherrill is the owner and photographer of Mesh Point Studio, in Paducah, Ky.  Mike has been a involved with graphic design and website development for over 14 years.  He has since expanded his creative horizons to include photography.  For more about Mike and to checkout his work head on over to www.meshpointstudio.com or to his Flickr page.

The other photographer is Jonathan D. Goforth and is based out of Waynesburg, Ky.  Jonathan has always been enamored by photography; from studying the stunning images in Sports Illustrated and National Geographic through his adolescent years.  He took the plunge into digital photography in 2007 when he received a Canon PowerShot S51S for birthday.  For more about Jonathan and to checkout his work head over to his Flickr page or to his 500px page.

October Challenge:  This months image is brought to us by Jonathan D. Goforth.  This is an image he took recently in his studio of himself.

Here is the image straight-out of the camera with no adjustments:
